“Dale has progressed a TON since first signing up for our Beginner Bootcamp with Alysha just about two years ago. He quickly found his strengths and discovered some weaknesses, but that has not stopped him. In fact, he has used those only to motivate him further. He is a great student in class, not afraid to ask questions or advice, and trains smart. He is consistent, puts in the work, and trusts the process.
His personal training sessions are incredibly rewarding because he is a quick learner - he abandons what isn't working, makes the necessary changes to adapt to what is, and magic happens! He is a constant positive energy to be around and always encouraging to everyone around him; a wonderful presence in the gym. It is a pleasure to have you,
Dale. Keep up the good work! If I had to guess, I'd predict 50 unbroken double unders and 10 unbroken bar (nope, that was last year's goal, which he crushed) ring mups in his near future .” - Coach Marianne
What brought you to CrossFit Crux?
My wife Alysha and I were just relaxing one night in early 2017 when she came across a post on Facebook for an upcoming On Ramp program at Crux. To tell the truth, I had only heard about CrossFit before but I didn’t know anything about it. I had assumed it was just another one of those fitness fads that come and go, man was I wrong! She said she was going to sign up and check it out so I decided to join her. From that very first class I was undoubtedly hooked!
What was your first impression? Has it changed?
My first thought when I walked in and saw a class finishing up a wod, I thought to myself that this was “my kinda place”. The tunes were cranked, clock was running, and the people were working as hard as they could doing some movements that I had never done or even seen before. It looked a little intimidating at first but that quickly turned into a personal challenge for me as our coach broke down and explained all the movements into step by step progressions.
What ‘s your favourite thing about or memory at Crux?
My favourite thing about Crux is definitely the people. Being surrounded by members and coaches who are all there for the same reasons that you are makes you feel more comfortable. Everyone is so friendly and supportive inside and outside of the gym. Someone is always there to push you through a long workout, hand out advice and tips on a skill or wod, give the occasional “bro rep” when you were close enough, and of course a no rep to keep you honest. It’s impossible to not be motivated by that! I’ve had lots of great memories at Crux so far like my first Open to hitting some PR’s that I didn’t think I would ever hit, but my favourite memory would have to be the CF24 event this past year. My daughter Brooklyn, who also just recently started doing CrossFit, came with me and we did around 12 of the 24 workouts together throughout the day. Along with everyone else who was there that participated, volunteered, and donated, it was a great day for a great cause.
What is your favourite Lift/Workout?
My favourite lift is a clean and my favourite workout is Murph. Although I haven’t done Murph with a vest yet so ask me that one again at the end of May.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated to get better at all the movements in general. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and CrossFit is definitely not shy about pointing them out but there is always room for improvement. I love how everything is recorded and tracked and that we test and re-test to measure the results. I enjoy the challenge of pushing myself to the limit and seeing that limit increase over time.
Advice to someone getting started?
All I can say is that whatever your fitness goals are CrossFit is for you. Whether it’s to lose weight, get back into shape, or to improve your existing fitness level, Crux is the place for you and you will have a great time doing it.
