Of the 400, 000+ people worldwide that participated in the 2018 CrossFit Games Open, a micro percentage will make it to the Games. However, coming off the heels of the Open and the JackAttack in-house competition, who has caught the competitive bug? Competing is fun, especially in partners or teams, and that's what our Crux Sport program strives to foster. Yes, higher level skills will often show up, but just like our CrossFit classes, everything is modifiable. That being said, our current prerequisites to attend Sport class are: proficiency in double unders and unassisted pull ups. However please speak to us if you are interested in coming out to a session if you are still working on these movements. We are happy to set you up with a program to get you on your way, or if you want to speed up that process we are always available for private skill training sessions.
If you have never signed up for a local competition, we highly encourage you to do so! We love nothing more than to represent our gym at local competitions. CrossFit has evolved so much over the last decade and there is definitely something for everyone out there!
Here are some awesome reasons to try your first competition.
1. You'll learn mental strength and discover how your body works under pressure.
You've been preparing for weeks for your first competition, and now it's time to put it all to the test. When push comes to shove, can you show up and perform? Competition adrenaline is real, and most of the time provides a great advantage performance-wise, but learning how to manage that and staying focused in the moment can only come with practice. Your body is stronger than you think it is, and we'll bet you'll be surprised at what you can accomplish when it's go time. It's an incredible feeling to know that you can rise to the occasion, and competition provides a wonderful opportunity to grow as an athlete.
2. It'll help you set new goals.
CrossFit is great because we can measure our progress and see how much we're improving, providing an easy avenue to set and reach new goals. Signing up for a competition gives you that concrete time domain in the future, from which you can work backwards and schedule smaller, manageable chunks of time as mini-goals into your training. Spend extra sessions breaking down movements that give you trouble, approaching workouts with different strategies, and practising being in sync with your teammates. You'll want to be at your best for when competition day arrives, so when you've got a set date in the future it's simple to justify putting in the extra training time to make sure you can.
3. It's fun!!!
The workouts will always be hard, and that's on us - we choose to submit to this training every day! But what makes it better? Suffering with like-minded individuals, of course. And competitions are filled with those. If you plan to do an individual competition, get some friends to sign up as well. Represent your gym together and cheer each other on during each of the day's events. If you register for a partner or team competition, you'll get the added bonus of contributing your hard work and leaving it all on the floor for someone other than yourself. The fact is that we push harder when others are around. Others provide accountability. In pairs or teams, we don't want to let anyone down so we fight for each other. Everyone knows (and loves) that community is one of the main driving forces of CrossFit. Fitness + friends = fun!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Otherwise, we'll see you Saturdays at 10:30am ;) Bring on the sweaty camaraderie
